About Averil

Justice 4 Averil Campaign

Averil Hart, our wonderful daughter, sister and friend, died at the tender age of nineteen from Anorexia Nervosa (AN). She died just ten weeks after starting at the University of East Anglia in December 2012.

We believe that her death was the result of a lack of care in services delivered by the two NHS organisations charged with her care.

These organisations, the Norfolk Community Eating Disorder service (NCEDS) & the University of East Anglia Medical Centre (UEAMC) were not fit for purpose and failed to deliver even basic care to Averil.

Why was a "trainee" psychologist, with no prior experience of Anorexia, appointed the sole point of care for a high risk Anorexic patient like Averil?

Can supervision of a "trainee" psychologist be regarded as adequate when the care provided led to the Averil losing consciousness and being taken to hospital where she subsequently died?

Why was cover not arranged for Averil's care when the "trainee" psychologist appointed went on holiday as per CPFT's Guidelines?

Why were Averil's medical notes withheld from her family for 18 months?

If CPFT had nothing to hide why did those involved write in emails the need to 'concoct a plan' with regards to Averil's care?

To honour Averil's Life.

To help protect other patients and sufferers of Anorexia Nervosa from a similar tragedy.

To find out the truth - exactly what went wrong with Averil's care.

To ensure that the lessons of Averil's tragedy are learned and change implemented widely.

To gain a sincere and appropriate apology from the NHS to Averil, her family, her boyfriend, friends and relatives.

To encourage changes in the focus of NHS complaints handling from the service itself to a coherent patient- and family-focused procedure, which spans multiple organisations, and has openness at its core.
